    🧗 Project Surveys – Going the Extra Mile

    As mentioned last month, awkward access is becoming the norm, whether it’s scaffolding over staircases or working at extreme heights. Here’s the result.

    As we continue to measure and fit increasingly complex window and roof blinds, often at heights of 7 to 8 meters or more, it’s essential that we stay sharp on safety.

    Whether it’s gables, lanterns, or angled roof structures, the challenge isn’t just technical, it’s physical. Every install must be approached with the right access equipment, proper planning, and a safety-first mindset.

    🎶 BIMM Bristol – XL Lantern Installation at 13 Meters

    At the heart of BIMM Bristol’s gallery space sits a striking 5-meter square skylight, positioned a full 13 meters above ground level. The challenge? To install two side-by-side XL Lantern blinds that would give the college full control over light and temperature in this dynamic, high-traffic environment.

    🏗️ Accessing the Impossible

    Reaching this height safely required serious planning. Professional scaffolders were brought in to construct a custom access tower within the building, an impressive structure in its own right. But the real precision came from the Specialist Blinds installation team.

    🔧 Precision in Motion

    Fitting such wide lantern blinds at this elevation demanded flawless coordination and trust. The team will work together to carefully lift the blinds up the scaffold and manoeuvre them through the scaffold floor, a feat requiring not just strength, but strategy.

    🦺 Safety at the Forefront

    Working at this height takes more than courage, it takes commitment to safety. Installers were equipped with full PPE, including safety harnesses and fall protection lines, ensuring every step of the process met the highest standards of health and safety.

    This project didn’t just raise blinds; it raised the bar. A true example of Specialist Blinds’ ability to deliver bespoke solutions in even the most demanding environments.

    Installation of the Month

    This month’s spotlight goes to a repeat customer who knew exactly where to turn when faced with a new challenge. Having lived with our blinds for over a year, Paula Lewis didn’t hesitate to call us back when her stunning 13-meter glass-panelled walkthrough began causing serious glare and heat build-up.

    Who you gonna call? 

    Howard at Specialist Blinds stepped in to design a tailored solution, and James H delivered an immaculate installation that hit every mark.

    The result? A beautifully shaded space with dramatically improved temperature control—without compromising the architectural elegance of the glass. Paula was over the moon with the service, the look, and most of all, the comfort.

    What’s Happening: Sales

    The award for most stunning setting probably should go to Arnaud this month.

    The client contacted the contracts office regarding an ‘unusual’ roof in the middle of a property. Arnaud followed up with the client and visited this stunning property in the picturesque village of Goudhurst in Kent. The property is split in half by a central full height glass atrium, giving the property stunning views of the Kent countryside.

    The atrium has a spiral staircase in the centre which will certainly be an obstacle to overcome, but the client has the foresight to own their own tower for the purpose of cleaning at height, so we are able to make use of the same.

    As the area lends itself to our Pure conservatory style roof system, we have sold Solo Connect so the client has flexibility of operation on smart devices. The side windows however presented a slight issue as they are too large for our normal Pure Solo configuration, but we have overcome this by specifying WT style motor and Bauhaus receiver so they are controlled by the Solo system.

    The walls are a perfect match to French Grey Duette fabric and Anthracite hardware will exactly match the framework, so the blinds will blend in seamlessly.

    Not only has Arnaud taken this fantastic order this month he is currently smashing the sales stats for August at 20 orders from 29 leads circa £105,000 nett. He’s kindly gone on holiday to give the rest of the sales team time to catch up this weekend, so let’s pull out all the stops everyone!

    Spotlight on Innovation

    By no means the biggest, highest or unique shape, but this lantern installation called for a bit of thought to meet the customer’s needs.

    The client called to enquire about a blind for their new lantern area but were quite specific about being able to both block light entirely and also be able to let light through, with the blind extended.

    In the past we have been able to install ‘Day/Night’ style blinds into side window scenarios, but we had to think how we could adapt this style of blind into a lantern scenario. The answer? Fit one lantern above the other!

    We installed 2 Clear Classic lanterns with the upper blind in SuperCell Pumice White dimout fabric and the lower blind in SuperCell Pumice White. Both on our Pure 10 motors with mini transformers.

    The compact nature of the framework and blinds meant we could position the blinds close together so the installation still looks sleek and provides the client with the ability to shade the room to their requirements.

    Competitor Watch

    Rob Scott Surveying to Replace Faulty Competitor’s Lantern

    A recent assessment of a faulty lantern (installed by a national competitor) – highlights critical shortcomings that underscore the importance of choosing the right product built with quality and customer satisfaction in mind.

    Poor Design and Lack of Structural Integrity

    The competitor’s lantern, as currently installed, lacks a frame. This omission leaves internal components and wiring exposed to environmental hazards, increasing the risk of damage and reducing lifespan. Unlike more robust designs that prioritise durability, this model appears to have been constructed with minimal regard for longevity.

    Outdated Technology and Material Quality

    This particular product was installed with the old tube-style battery pack. The use of a single-layer fabric further diminishes the product’s resilience, providing insufficient protection against weather elements. Additionally, as seen below, six visible micro cables.

    Functional Failures and Customer Service Delays

    Consequently, the blind has ceased functioning entirely. The customer was unhappy with the unacceptable delays – they had a visit scheduled for September, more than two months after the initial customer complaint. Such sluggish support reflects poorly on their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, so the customer contacted us for a replacement.

    It’s been great seeing everyone in their new uniforms this month! Our branding is now front and centre—literally. Just this week, one of our team members was approached at a petrol station by someone who noticed the bold logo printed on the back of their shirt. That kind of visibility speaks volumes—brand everything and let the work speak for itself. 💥

     Project Surveys – Going the Extra Mile 📏

    Survey work is becoming more challenging, especially when it comes to access and site-specific demands. In the past, most surveys took about an hour—but that’s changing. Architects keep us on our toes, and sometimes blinds are an afterthought in their plans, especially when it comes to accessing roof spaces.


    This month, a big shout-out to Ryan, who tackled a particularly tricky survey and handled it with skill and style. These kinds of jobs take serious planning and attention—thanks for delivering.

    Installation of the Month

    The Brief

    An apartment where the window to the bedroom is a huge arch which spans the entire wall. The client had fitted curtains to part of the glazing and despite contact with numerous blind companies was unable to find a solution for the curved windows around the perimeter. 

    UNTIL THEY CAME TO US! 

    The Solution 

    A combination of our Pure Aspect Gable blinds for the upper, shallower curves and our Pure GS Roof Style Gable blinds for the lower, steeper curves. 

    We were able to motorise the upper gables in difficult to access areas and provide precision curved cuts to the lower manual blinds. 

    The client at last can enjoy a good night’s sleep during the lighter evenings and early sunrises and were very grateful. They mentioned that other apartments in the same block all face the same challenge and none had found a solution that worked. A real stamp of confidence in our capability and quality. 

    Proof, as they say, is in the pudding. When we say we can do it, we mean it. 

    This success belongs to all corners of our company — from the Office Team to Sales, Factory, and our Installations crew. It’s a prime example of what collaboration, skill, and commitment can achieve. 

    Recently Dan and Rob had to revisit the installation of blinds at Wryesdale Park.  

    A stunning wedding venue on the Wryesdale Estate, near Scotton in Lancashire, we fitted blinds in March of 2024 to the atrium in the ‘party barn’, where up to 200 guests can dance the night away after the ceremony. 

    We were contacted during the building process to provide a shading solution so that the guests would have a comfortable environment to party in and our Pure Duo motorised SuperCell roof blinds provided the perfect solution. 

    All was well until a contractor was called in to carry out some sand blasting, which sadly for the owners caused considerable damage to the blinds. Not so sad for us though, as they were left with no choice but to replace the whole blind installation. Having negotiated a fair discounted price, for the repeat business, the client was happy to proceed with a like for like replacement and is once again over the moon with our works and the benefit the installation gives to the wedding guests. 

    Dan and Rob did have to work a little harder second time around though, as a scissor lift was used on the first install, to allow easy passage along the length of the atrium, which is interrupted by many tie bars! On the second installation though the flooring was in place and was too fragile to support the weight of a scissor lift, so we had to use towers that had to be manually erected and then taken down to move along and re-erected to clear each tie bar. Well done Dan and Rob for the extra effort to deliver a stunning installation. 

    What’s Happening: Sales

    Make mine a pint! 

    In March we received an enquiry from The Molson Coors Brewing Company. They had recently relocated their offices within Burton on Trent to be closer to their UK Brewery site, which has links to the town dating back to 1744.  

    Colin met with Theresa, their Property and Facilities Manager to discuss their requirements and learned that the offices are within an existing building which has been owned by the Molson company for generations and has been used as part of National Brewery Heritage Trust to preserve the brewery heritage.

    Repair and renovation works commenced in 2023 culminating in a large open office area within a central atrium, with large gable windows on the upper floor and wide windows to the ground floor. Whilst other rooms/areas have had blinds specified within the renovation contract, the commercial supplier was unable to provide a solution for the large gable shapes and wide windows, and it soon became apparent that working in a central atrium was difficult due to the excessive glare and heat that the uncovered windows provided. Music to Colin’s ears! 

    The solution Colin provided was our Duette Pure Aspect Gable blinds and our Duette Pure Free-hanging window blinds using Pure Power 10 motors. Being able to provide a solution to their problem meant the order was placed! 

    There is the possibility of more windows that need covering, so watch this space for updates on installation and hopefully future works. 

    Spotlight on Innovation

    We love a challenge! 

    Sometimes it seems that architects and house builders are deliberately making window shapes that can’t be covered, which presents a difficult situation for the homeowner. Paul Herrington had one such enquiry for an upside down triangular shaped window in a bathroom.  

    Privacy and insulation are key requirements, but when the shape doesn’t lend itself to an inverted Aspect gable shape or GS roof style gable model, what do we do?? 

    We do what we do best, come up with a solution! 

    Mining the depths of Kevin’s experience, a hybrid model combining an RS3 roof blind and GS gable blind was proposed. The twist? It was set to run from side to side, rather than the traditional top to bottom. 

    The blind was specified as a Pure 10 12v motor with battery, to negate the need to manually move with wet hands, while in the bath (!) and SuperCell Dimout fabric provides the privacy and insulation required.  

    A unique blind for a unique window, superbly surveyed and installed by Rob Drummond. 

    Well done to all involved.

    We’d had our gable window & 5 meter bifolds for 3 years before getting blinds. I saw an installation on Instagram and only then realised you could get amazing electric blinds. I sent off an enquiry, arranged a chap to come & give me a quote. Pretty sure his name was Andy. Brilliant service and talked thru the options. Got electric blinds for gable (triangle) window and blinds that sit in the bifold recess and can open from top of bottom. Install was by Jeff who did the survey also. Overall from enquiry to install was 3 months ish which I thought was quick. The quality and fit is amazing. Also got French door bifold blinds in another room (black out ones). Total cost was c. £7.5K so not cheap but I didn’t fall off my chair. After previously using other well know natural blind/ shutter companies I was realistic in what you have to pay for quality. This certainly didn’t disappoint.. I am over the moon. We can now watch TV again in the evenings during summer, and the heat is definitely improved, the blinds allow the room to be so much cooler. The service has been great. My only regret, I hadn’t discovered Specialist Blinds sooner.

    You may remember that we mentioned this Facebook group a few months ago – it’s not an official site, but attracts comments from many unsatisfied customers.

    What’s Happening: Marketing

    As it’s now peak holiday season, and we’ve already seen a slight dip in leads again, it’s important that we continue to nurture those recent leads to ensure they’re not forgotten. @SalesTeam, please make every effort to contact all leads from the last few weeks, and return any to us that you’ve been unable to contact.  

    Earlier in the month we visited a customer in Berkshire who kindly agreed to let our photographer visit them to take extra photos and videos. It’s a stunning property with 3 lanterns across their open plan lounge, diner and bar area. A huge ‘thank you’ to Martin for discussing this opportunity with his customer.

    What’s Happening: Installations

    Field Update from Rich Jones – A Month of Aventuras!

    June has been full of adventure—from fitting out boats to navigating them to access properties, the team has been on the move. We’ve also seen a surge in commercial contracts being installed, many involving high-access work. A big reminder that safety always comes first—thank you for keeping that top of mind. 

    Behind the scenes, a lot of effort has gone into updating our survey paperwork to make things more efficient on site. This will be rolled out soon, along with a call to each Installer to walk through the changes and what’s needed on the new forms. A big thank you to Ian and Judy for their input and help in making the documents look sharp and professional. 

    It’s also been a pleasure to catch up with some of you this month and see the professional, courteous way you represent us on site. It truly makes a difference. 

    A Quick Reminder 

    As we move into the warmer months, please take care in the heat—especially when working in roofs. Stay hydrated and take regular breaks when you need them.

    Shout-outs this month: “Two of our newest Installers”  

    Installation – Overcoming obstacles 

    We recently completed an installation, which on paper appeared to be straight forward, but the client had an idea, he hoped we could accommodate! 

    They had, had many issues with their existing install from a well-known nationwide blind supplier who had installed ‘semi-motorised’ blinds which moved via an electric screwdriver turning a drive rod. You did not read that incorrectly! After many failures – 4 return visits within a month to resolve – the client’s patience was exhausted, so they approached us.  

    On the surface of it, our proposal was for rectangular roof blinds on our Pure Quad system – so far so normal! Due to the presence of 2 automatic roof vents, we had planned the blinds to meet either side of the vent. Again, all quite standard, but the client asked on survey could we lower the fitting position of the blinds so that the blinds could pass under the vents and run the full drop. As it was a recess fit between the rafters, this wouldn’t be the normal way to proceed as the blinds would hang lower. Ryan looked at the space available and by positioning a lantern side channel, he was able to create a fixing point for the mounting profile, for the Pure motor rail, low enough that the blinds cleared the vents but stayed within the rafter thickness, meaning the blinds had minimal gaps. 

    Not only could we trump the competitor’s specification, but we also modified our usual working practises to address a client concern and provide a seamless fit. 

    Installation of the Month

    ‘Land Ahoy!’

    With an address that starts as 28 The Island, you conjure up images of prestigious properties on secluded strips of land that are inaccessible by road. Well, you’d not be far from the truth with an installation that was completed this month, as it sits on an island in the Thames that can only be accessed by foot bridge.

    Thankfully Ryan and Jack were not made to carry everything across the bridge or get their feet wet, as they were able to unload the blinds and tools on to a barge, so they could be transported across the water to the client’s property. A unique way of starting the job!

    The installation was a combination of our Bauhaus profile Aspect 3 gable blinds and roller blinds, all fitted into preplanned recesses, so the blind is concealed when retracted, giving beautiful views across the Thames.

    What’s Happening: Sales

    Sale of the Month 

    Steve had an enquiry from Scarborough Hill Country Inn, a beautiful boutique hotel and wedding venue set in the Norfolk Broads, looking for roof blinds for their existing wooden conservatory area. 

    The conservatory footprint allows for seating up to 60 people for various functions, so the client was looking for something that provides shade but also does not limit light. Our English Pinoleum was the solution, quoted in 201 Shaded White, which would be the perfect colour to compliment the décor and give a bright fresh finish. 

    The owners of the hotel agreed and proceeded with an order and some installation shots can be seen here. Look out for more pictures and videos coming soon to social media.

    Such was their satisfaction they have asked Steve to quote for another hotel along the waterway in the Broads. Well done Steve.

    Delighted with the work carried out by Specialist Blinds. Initially met with Arnaud, who showed us the extensive range of blinds available to us. He was very professional and knowledgeable. Lex came a week or so later to measure up and then returned a couple of weeks after that to fix the blinds. He was so meticulous in every thing he They look great.     “All aboard!”

    We at Specialist Blinds know we can achieve shapes and sizes that other manufacturers can’t, the name above the door says it all, but once in while we come across something that isn’t overly big or oddly shaped but is still unusual so needs a unique solution.

    The Sidings At Carriages Restaurant called upon us to specify blinds for their main restaurant entrance and their café and farm shop, which are inside two beautifully restored 1970’s train carriages. With the windows being very wide and having a deep curved recess we had to look at surface mounting the blinds. This posed the problem of creating a fixing point on the carriage wall that was both discrete and didn’t distract from the stunning interior but was also robust enough to ensure a secure fixing. With the proximity of diners seated next to the window we also had some concerns regarding safety.

    The factory sourced a special bracket which enabled the ‘foot’ of the button fit blind to be secured and the contoured shape of the bracket appeased our concerns regarding safety. After discussions with the Facilities Manager at Carriages, to explain how we can provide a solution and sending a physical sample for approval, we had a way forward and the job went ahead and unlike most train journeys from the 70’s we arrived on time!

    The blinds blend in seamlessly with the surroundings and provide the perfect shading solution for the diners as noted by the Facilities Manager – “We’re so pleased with the blinds. They’ve made such a difference to our guests’ comfort while dining with us. Thank you again!”

    We pride ourselves on simply being better than our competitors and Martin completed an installation where this is obvious for all to see. 

    The Brief – Blinds for gable windows installed at height. The location was a bedroom so dimout fabrics were required. 

    Existing blinds fitted were a single pleat, roof style gable, pulling up from the bottom. The cord holes in the single pleat fabric meant that the fabric simply did not provide a room darkening scenario and when the blind was retracted 13 cords/wires were visible and obscured the view. 

    The Solution – Our Aspect 3 Bauhaus blinds with Pure Power 40 motors.  

    The pitch of the headrail is quite steep, but we could overcome any issues with fabric support at the apex by adding an additional interim rail in a complimentary finish. Another finishing touch was to hard wire the power supply directly to the Pure Power motors, so that client no longer needed a white transformer box, as a wall feature, to see each day!

    Google SEO Projects (Search Engine Optimisation)

    We’re embarking on a couple of new projects to help with our Google rankings.  

    As we’ve mentioned before, Google’s algorithms are constantly changing. As well as the usual challenges of us competing with Sponsored links and online shopping sites (which are always at the top of Google’s results), Google is now also favouring AI Overviews at the top of results. 

    Here’s a couple of examples of the search results for ‘Are thermal conservatory blinds any good?’. For a search on a PC, you’ll see we have top results on the right-hand side for both websites: 

    You get slightly different results on a mobile, with results just showing our article on the CB website.

    As you can imagine there are hundreds of relevant questions for our products, so we’re working to prioritise the most popular questions. 

    In addition, Google also highlights questions in a ‘People also ask…’ section.

    Here’s an example when searching for ‘lantern roof blinds’: 

    We’ve always included these types of questions as part of our Google SEO strategy, but we are currently working through a HUGE research document to ensure that our websites answer these questions for Google to pick up.

    We have been working with three external consultants for 6-12 months now, mostly focusing on our social media, the website revamp and SEO to improve our organic results in search engines. Jesse has now left the company, so his responsibilities are being absorbed by the rest of the team here as well as our external consultants to ensure continuity in our marketing strategy.

    BBSA’s Tribute to Appeal Home Shading Boss

    Michael Madigan, executive chairman of Appeal Home Shading, sadly died following a motoring accident earlier this year.

    Known to his friends as Mike, he was a well-known figure in the shading industry and had led Appeal’s board of directors since 1998, growing the business into a successful national brand.

    His colleague, Appeal finance director, Peter French, told Openings: “Mike’s foresight means that despite our inevitable sorrow and grief, the company is in a strong financial position and arrangements are in place to ensure the management succession is assured.”

    “The directors intend to guide Appeal forward with the same clear business ethics and professionalism that Mike showed us.”

    Mike leaves behind his wife Jane and children Christopher, Tara and Suzy, all of whom have worked within the company.
